BESC - Basic Electrical Safety Competence

Electrical Safety Training

What is BESC?

The Basic Electrical Safety Competence (BESC) registration scheme is intended for anyone who carries out work either directly or indirectly, on or near operational plant and equipment associated with the transmission and distribution of electricity.

The scheme is a workplace competency assessment and registration process. The scheme standards are at a basic level and deal with entering, moving around and exiting work areas. Three separate standards exist:

What do I need to be BESC Registered?

If you wish to work on National Grid sites, it is important you act immediately. A prerequisite for National Grid workers is to be Person Trained prior to the Basic Electrical Safety Competence Assessment. For more information on this you can go to http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Electricity/Safety/NSI/ and click on the National Safety Instruction 30. If you need further information on this please do not hesitate to call Becky, Centre Coordinator, ESTL on 0114 2903666 or email becky.frain@elecsafety.co.uk. Person Training can be booked through the Energy and Utility Skills website at http://go.eusr.co.uk/ngrid. After successfully completing the BESC Assessment, candidates can directly enrol onto the National Grid Competent Persons Training.

How long does registration last?

Following successful workplace assessment against a particular standard, candidates will be registered on the EU Skills Registration Database (www.eusr.co.uk) and issued with a Cover Note from the assessor, the candidate will be registered on the EUSR web database and a Basic Electrical Safety Competence Card produced within 28 days. The registration lasts for three years, after which the candidate must undertake a further assessment to remain registered with EUSR.

Electrical Safety Training Limited is an accredited training centre, as recognised by Energy and Utility Skills, authorised to offer training and assessments for BESC using our valued team of assessors, who are fully qualified assessors and tutors with several years of experience in the electricity industry. Further information for Basic Electrical Safety Competence is available on request by contacting Becky, Centre Coordinator, ESTL on 0114 2903666 or email becky.frain@elecsafety.co.uk. Information is also available via the Energy and Utility Skills website at http://go.eusr.co.uk/besc.

Is training a requirement?

Training is not required by the scheme but is highly recommended by Electrical Safety Training Limited. ESTL can arrange for the training to take place at an agreed training centre or at your own premises. Quotations are available upon request.
